Abraham Lincoln, possibly the greatest and most beloved president in the history of the United States, said, “Republicans are for both the man and the dollar, but in case of conflict the man before the dollar.” This quote by the very first elected Republican president neatly sums up what the GOP stands for: a desire to work for life and the people. In what may be the most politically hostile environment in the history of the US, it is easy to abandon your ideals in order to attack a political opponent. When Donald Trump came along, a huge change seemed to happen inside of the Republican Party. It can be debated whether Trump changed the party for the better or for the worse, but even beneath the rhetoric and name calling, there is still the foundation upon which the GOP was founded, and that persists today — a foundation of simply, “Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
Life
In 1973, one of the most consequential decisions in the history of the Supreme Court took place which changed America forever. That decision was Roe v. Wade. Republicans were quick to rally against the notion that a baby’s life was inconsequential and meaningless, and this fight against the killing of an innocent baby continues today. George W. Bush said, “I think the platform ought to be pro-life. It is the basis of the Republican Party. People have got to understand that abortion is not a contraceptive.” The GOP has to always be quick to condemn the killing of innocents. Nobody has the right to make the decision on whether or not another person lives or dies. The baby inside of the womb is not just a mass of cells or another part of the woman’s body, but it is a living and distinct human being.
Liberty
In 1854 when the Republican Party was first formed, it was created as a resistance against the Kansas-Nebraska Act and the expansion of slavery into the newly acquired American territories. The first Republican Party member to serve in the White House was none other than Abraham Lincoln, who led the nation through the Civil War and abolished slavery. At its very beginning, the GOP was built on liberty, equality, and the idea that all men were created equal. Senator Ted Cruz is quoted as saying, “If the Republican Party stands for individual liberty, if we defend the Bill of Rights, if we stand for keeping this country safe, then we deserve to win, and if we don’t, we deserve to lose.” Let’s win.
Pursuit of Happiness
Socialism is a vice that sucks the will to work from the people. Though not a Republican, it was Thomas Jefferson who once said that “It is part of the American character to…surmount every difficulty by resolution and contrivance.” With hard work and success comes happiness and satisfaction; with hand-outs and big government comes depression and diminished self-confidence. The Republicans’ stand for capitalism is essential to the success and growth of our nation. Sarah Palin once summed up capitalism by saying, “A free market system allows all parties to compete, which ensures the best and most competitive project emerges, and ensures a fair democratic process.”
